Efficient use of waste heat and cold storage throughout the year

The plastics processor SOMA cools its injection molding machines using four Terracool high-performance energy piles (HEP). Thanks to the 2000-liter cold storage tank, the cooling circuit is also able to cope with peak loads.

Thanks to the 2000-liter cold storage tank, the cooling circuit can also cope with peak loads. In summer, the waste heat (up to almost 100 kW) is fed to the upper area of the HEP, extracted via a heat exchanger and slowly released into the surrounding ground. In winter, the production waste heat (up to 40 °C) is used for low-temperature heating.

Heat at more than 65 °C is supplied by the 11 kW air compressor. It feeds the large heat storage tank and the 500-liter vessel with the fresh water heater. To prevent 65 °C hot water in the 5000-liter storage tank from being cooled down by the machine waste heat, the heat is coupled into and extracted from the stratified storage tank at different heights. All heating and cooling flows are managed by the varmeco VarCon380 Pro control system, which has been expanded accordingly with modules.
