The building envelope and heating technology of the residential complex at Felix-Auerbach-Straße 18-20 in Jena were replaced as part of a complete refurbishment. The main aim was to reduce energy costs and provide hygienic domestic hot water. This was achieved with a combination of solar thermal energy to support the heating system and varmeco fresh water technology. A preheating stage is installed upstream of the fresh water heating system. This preheating stage is exclusively solar
and makes it possible to use solar energy even at a low temperature level. As the preheating also works on the flow-through principle, there is no need to heat up to 60 °C every day. This improves the energy balance.
Thanks to preheating, the specific collector yield is impressively high at around 600 kWh/(m2a).
