How waste heat recovery works

In many companies, process or waste heat is generated that (still) escapes unused into the environment. Waste heat recovery recycles this „waste heat“ and turns it into usable heat. In bakeries, restaurants and pubs, for example, refrigeration systems generate waste heat at a low temperature level. With the help of waste heat recovery, it can be used for heating and hot water technology. This saves energy and protects both your wallet and the environment.

To use waste heat, the energy flows within a building must be analyzed precisely: Where is waste heat generated, in what quantity and at what temperature levels? What temperature is required to utilize the heat energy effectively? Clarifying these questions usually reveals that raising the temperature is the key to success. This is where our heat booster for regenerative energy comes into play: the eXergiemaschine.

Using regenerative energy: With eXergiemaschine at the right temperature level

The eXergiemaschine is a core component of efficient waste heat recovery that was previously only available for large, industrial systems. Our eXergiemaschine also serves the small and medium power range. It is a special heat pump designed for high source temperatures and a high temperature spread. High temperature spread means that it makes in the Buffer tank (heating storage tank) makes the water warmer at the top and colder at the bottom, thus ensuring a large difference between the flow and return temperatures.

Dual benefit of waste heat recovery: efficient use of renewable energy

This is crucial for waste heat utilization. For example, if a waste heat source supplies a temperature level of 40 °C, but more than 60 °C is required for domestic hot water preparation, the eXergiemaschine raises the heat to this level. At the same time, the lower area of the storage tank - the return to the heat source - is cooled, which ensures greater efficiency for most heat sources (including the cooling systems mentioned above).

The eXergiemaschine therefore fulfills a dual purpose: It converts waste heat into usable heat and brings advantages for the operation of the (waste) heat sources.

Making better use of renewable energy

The temperature spread achieved by our eXergiemaschine also comes into its own in systems for renewable energy. Solar thermal systems can be operated with a higher annual yield, hybrid modules (they combine Solar thermal energy and photovoltaics) provide slightly more electricity thanks to the additional cooling, heat pumps can work at their ideal operating point and correspondingly efficiently. This makes the eXergiemaschine an ideal partner in heating systems in which renewable energy is to be used as effectively as possible.
